If you’re like most people, you try to make your home look presentable before company arrives – you wouldn’t want anyone questioning your well-being or your cleanliness, would you? If you’re having someone important come visit, you probably also wouldn’t let them see you in your "bum-around" clothes or your pajamas if you want to make a good impression, either. On a similar note, you can tell a lot about a business by what you find inside, which is why it should be second nature for a kitchen and bath business to keep everything, including their showroom and employees, in tip top shape.

What should you expect when you come into the showroom?

Take a trip to any of our five award-winning Long Island Specialty Supercenters, and we guarantee you’ll feel at home, which is appropriate (after all, pieces of your future home may be found in our showroom). Here’s what we find to be important qualities maintained in a showroom:

A clean atmosphere – Let’s face it…if you walk into a kitchen and bath showroom and find it in an unkempt condition, you should probably turn around and walk in the other direction. If the business can’t even keep their showroom clean, how do you know you can trust them to make yours look beautiful? Signs of an unclean atmosphere can range in everything from physical cleanliness, to maintenance of display items, and an overall clean, updated look.

Professional employees – Staff should be presentable and easily identifiable through their uniform/dress code. They should be looking at you as an important guest visiting their home, and should display their respect by maintaining their professionalism. Take note of how the staff greets you – do they seem genuinely helpful and friendly? Are they willing to listen? You should also make sure the designers are accredited and seem fit to take on your job. These details are signs that the company will be a good fit.

Clear organization – Organization should be apparent from the very moment you walk in the showroom. The display areas should flow nicely and make selection easy. The staff should be visibly organized in their conversations and their processes. If you see clear signs of disorganization early in the process, you can only assume that it will get worse later on. Kitchen and bath remodeling has a lot of moving parts, and organization is absolutely imperative in the success of your project.

A beautiful selection – There’s no better way to know if you love a product than to see it in person, which is why our showrooms have 100,000 sq ft dedicated to over 650 full sized kitchen displays (in a wide range of styles) and over 195 full size bath suites, plus numerous custom cabinet selection centers, faucet selection centers, counter selection centers, closet organization solutions and anything else you would need (right down to the cutting boards). Seeing swatches and small samples just isn’t enough to make a decision you will live with for years to come, which is why our showrooms allow you to touch, feel, and visualize exactly what the products will look like in your home.

If you’re exploring showrooms in the Long Island area, come see what we have to offer. Remember back when life was less demanding? Yes, we’re having a hard time thinking of when that was, too! But, we know it did. Now-a-days, people are always running to the next place, booking more meetings than they can attend, and checking phones for the next update – whether that's on social media, ESPN, email, or all of the above. In a complex world, sometimes a little simplicity is needed.

Get the look

As you plan your kitchen remodel, why not just keep it simple with a modern style? It can be your breath of fresh air for your complicated days.

To get the look in your space, keep the following words in mind:

Horizontal – Look at most modern kitchens and you’ll begin to notice a few similarities; one of which is an emphasis on horizontal lines. From horizontally-set tubular hardware to long, lean stacked full access cabinet drawers, these lines make a beautifully modern statement.

Industrial – The style dates back to the early 1900s, just after the industrial revolution, so not surprisingly, industrial touches are welcomed in modern designs. You’ll often find materials such as concrete and stainless steel adorning kitchen countertops, appliances, or even floors, and they blend nicely with other natural materials as well…which leads us to our next point.

Natural – While you won’t find many gaudy patterns cluttering this simple style, you will find natural details prevalent, such as natural graining in wood floors, or natural stone countertops. The simple style of the rest of the room lets these natural details shine.

Open - Modern kitchens of this era are opening things up a bit and keeping things social. You’ll often find an island in the layout, bar stools, fewer walls, and optimal lighting to complete the open feel.

If you’re tired of running around all day and coming home to an outdated, complicated kitchen design, ask us about more modern options that will give you some relief.

With all this cold weather plunging down from the arctic in recent weeks, we thought we’d thaw you out a bit with some warmer thoughts. Spring will be here before we all know it, so there is no time like the present to start the initial plans on that remodel you resolved about this New Year. Sure, you could wait until spring to get started, or you can get started now and beat the mob of people who come out of hibernation with plans to remodel.

Why now? We can think of reasons for people to remodel any time of year, but now is an optimal time. Here’s why:

1) You’ll keep ahead of the game.

As we mentioned above, spring is a popular time to remodel. Getting started on the initial tasks now (like brainstorming, narrowing down your budget and finding professionals you click with) will mean you’ll be ready to get started early - and that means you’ll be enjoying the benefits of your new kitchen or bathroom sooner rather than later.

2) The weather will be beautiful soon.

Sure, it’s hard to believe that it’s ever going to warm up while we’re in the dead of winter, but spring is peeping out over the horizon and it will be here before you know it. Spring weather is, as Goldilocks would say "not too cold, not too hot…but just right." During your remodel, people will likely be in and out of your house – opening and closing doors and windows – so you’ll be more comfortable if the remodeling goes on in optimal weather. We all know how muggy it can get in New York during late summertime! Start now and beat the late summer installation.

Adding to this point, if your kitchen is going to be under construction, it will likely be out of commission (so no cooking indoors) for a bit. Your grill or outdoor kitchen will be a great tool for your cooking needs – and eating outdoors in the nice weather means you won’t have to worry about dust settling on your cheeseburger.

3) You’ll have fewer interruptions.

With the kids in school until summertime (if you have kids) and the bulk of the holiday gatherings in fall and wintertime, you can relax and watch your remodel happen with less stress and fewer interruptions. And, if you do plan to host guests for spring holidays, chances are, at this point, your construction won’t start until after the main spring holidays anyway.

4) Because spring means cleaning and feeling good.

Think of your remodeling plans as a slightly larger way to "spring clean." What better time is there to get more organized so you can feel good about your home again? There’s no time like spring to de-clutter the items you don’t use anymore, rediscover things you didn’t know you still had in the back of those cabinets, and rebuild a space that compliments your life perfectly. With all those extra daylight hours coming soon, you’ll be able to get a better look at your current kitchen to find out what you like and dislike about it.

Food cooking on the stove has the power to make a whole families mouth water, but when the smell of last night’s dinner is still present at breakfast, you either need to empty your garbage, or think about installing a better kitchen ventilation system.

Range hoods (also commonly referred to as Ventilation Hoods or Extractor Hoods) are a staple in kitchens, often due to their style, but also in large part for their function. So, what do they do exactly? They hang out in the kitchen area and work hard to keep the air clean, extracting grease, smoke, fumes, dust and grime – which keeps it away from your walls, fabrics, pores and lungs.

What to look for

For every 10,000 BTU your gas stove puts off, your range hood should have at least 100 CFMs (cubic feet per minute). It is also important to take into consideration the width of your appliance as a guide – You should have a minimum of 100 CFMs per linear foot if your range is against the wall, or 150 CFMs per linear foot if it is on an island, as we mentioned in our professional cooking appliances post.

Noise level is another important consideration when choosing a ventilation option. Noise level of range hoods is rated in sones. The higher the sone rating, the louder the fan. Typical sone ratings for range hoods run from two at low speed to six at high speed. For context, a normal conversation takes place at about four sones. The Home Ventilating Institute recommends that range hoods not be louder than 9 sones.

Ducting options

Ducted Hoods – These range hoods extract the elements and vent them through a duct, which completely removes the grease, smoke and irritants from your home. The duct should always lead outdoors – never to an attic or another room.

Most range hoods have their fans (or blowers) mounted inside the hood. However, ducted range hoods also allow for remote installation of the fan, on an outside wall, or on your roof. Remote installation of the vent fan is more efficient because it pulls rather than pushes the air through your range hood. Since the fan operates on the outside of your home, noise levels are also significantly reduced, making remote installation a must to consider if noise is a concern

Ductless Hoods – Ductless (also known as duct-free, non-vented or recirculating) hoods are exactly as the name implies. If you do not or cannot install a duct system in your home, ductless hoods will allow you to expel cooking grease and steam from the air through a filter. As the “recirculating” name hints, these hoods suck air through the filter and then recirculate the cleaned air back, so heat and humidity may remain. It is important if you choose this type of hood that you replace your filter as per the manufacturers recommendations, otherwise, it will not be able to work to its full potential.

Convertible Hoods – Convertible hoods are a more flexible option, in that they can be installed in different ducting modes, so you can choose to use it as a ducted hood or as a non-vented hood.

It always seems like there is never enough space in the house for all the stuff that is in it. Even in some remodels that add cabinets to the kitchen and bath, homeowners still feel like there isn’t enough space to keep everything organized. The reason is they likely didn’t design their space for optimal storage. There are changes you can make to your cabinets and storage areas that will give you a spot to put everything you have.

Bathroom Storage Options
Adding floating shelving on walls or an over the john wall cabinet are both great ways to add bathroom storage(hidden or exposed) without taking up more floor space (making it a perfect option in a small guest bath). If you have a vanity, you can also opt for a tilt-down drawer under the sink to hold items like lotions and toothpaste freeing up extra room in your medicine cabinet.

Storage and Organization in the Kitchen

The center of the home, the kitchen, always needs the most storage. It not only needs to hold the food you cook in it, it also needs to hold all of the items you need to cook the food. With a couple of customizations, you can give yourself a space that has a spot for everything. How many times have you lost items under the sink because the cabinet has no shelving? Consider adding shelving and door mounted racks to hold your cleaning supplies and items that need to stay out of the way.

If you have deep drawers, add pegs to hold items in place. The pegs will keep your bowls and serving-ware from banging together when you open and close the drawers.

Organization in drawers is as important as having enough space for all of your items. Instead of letting spices and spray cans take up valuable shelf space in wall mounted cabinets, add a tall drawer next to the stove so that they have their own space that is close to the area where you’ll need them. Also consider build in utensil organizers in your drawers. This small addition builds an organization system that fits perfectly in your drawer. Then, there won’t be any more useless area created by a utensil holder that doesn’t fit properly.
Adding functional storage and organization pieces is the finishing touch on your kitchen or bath remodel. Kitchens and bathrooms today have far more choices than those of years past. With advancement of technology, not only have finish and style choices become plentiful, but also other details that make a difference in comfort and costs around the home. Here are some noteworthy advancements in kitchen and bathroom faucets worth considering – and these are just a few of the many options available, which we’ll be glad to go over with you in more detail.

Touch Faucets

One of the most well-known new faucet technology solutions is the touch-to-start variety. You’ve probably seen the commercial advertising Delta’s Touch2O®Technology, where the multitude of people with messy hands simply tap the faucet with a wrist or elbow to start the flow of water. Touch technology can be a great advantage in kitchens and bathrooms, cutting down on contamination and generally just making things a bit easier - especially when your hands are full. Similar to Delta’s Touch2O Technology, you’ll also find brands incorporating SmartTouch® or other similar solutions.

Sensor Faucets

Designed to conserve water and promote a healthy, sanitary environment, these hands-free faucets dispense only the amount of water users need. What’s more, they don’t all require batteries, so in many cases, there is no need for replacement and no need to worry about battery waste. Technological advancements have allowed companies such as TOTO to offer EcoPower® Sensor Faucets for bathrooms to create faucet solutions that automatically power the flow of water. As for temperature – no need to worry about that. In most cases with sensor faucets, water temperature and flow cycle (as well as detection distance) are preset by you to ensure minimal water waste and no scalding hot or freezing cold shocks – unless of course that’s what you prefer.

Water Efficiency Faucets

When it comes to efficiency, technological advancements have allowed manufacturers to create solutions which eliminate wastefulness – which helps the environment and keeps money in homeowners’ pockets. One thing you can look for if you’re in the market for a new efficient bathroom faucet or faucet accessories is the WaterSense® label. Products donning the WaterSense label have completed a certification process to make sure they meet EPA criteria to save water. As the EPA website states, “WaterSense labeled bathroom sink faucets and accessories that use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute can reduce a sink’s water flow by 30 percent or more from the standard flow of 2.2 gallons per minute without sacrificing performance.”

Efficient kitchen faucets are also available today - such as Delta’s kitchen faucets that have a flow rate of 1.8 gpm vs. the standard 2.2gpm (gallons per minute) and GROHE WaterCare® kitchen products certified at 1.5gpm by IAPMO R&T - to name a couple.

As we mentioned earlier, technology has allowed for the development of so many smart options when it comes to your faucets – both kitchen and bathroom (or anywhere else you have a sink). While some options may cost more upfront, they tend to pay for themselves over time in conveniences and less water waste. Are they for you? That’s for you to decide.

Every homeowner is unique, and it is always fun to see what each person chooses to include in their kitchen or bathroom remodel. Even when someone knows exactly what they want style-wise, our designers still get many questions about what’s popular with other homeowners. Whether you let it affect your remodeling choices or not, it is always interesting to see what’s trending (and can especially come in handy if you’re trying to remodel with resale in mind).

While you can find many resources online about remodeling trends, it is important to note that remodeling trends, like real-estate, vary widely across different regions.

What’s popular now?

Here are some preferences we’re seeing this year in the Long Island area:

Cabinetry – While we offer thousands of cabinetry styles and color combinations, we’ve seen a definite trend toward white paint and darker stain finishes paired with recessed panel cabinet doors (where the center panel is flat, displaying understated elegance). All of these choices can be incorporated into just about any kitchen style of your choice – from traditional to contemporary.

Hardware – Tubular pulls are a clean and sleek look we’ve been seeing a trend toward. They complement the crispness of a recessed panel door beautifully.

Countertops – When it comes to countertops, we’re still noticing a pull toward granite and quartz countertops, due to their natural beauty, easy upkeep, and durability. With hundreds of color options and a variety of edge profiles, granite and quartz countertops also fit into all kitchen styles.

Appliances – Gone are the days of boring kitchen appliances. Today, people are making their kitchens look professional with commercial-style appliances. Stainless steel is still the popular choice, but ranges have been growing in size and power (with sleek and powerful range hoods to accompany them).

Faucets – With technology making advancements in all areas of life, a popular choice is the touch faucet. Benefits range from convenience to less kitchen contamination.

While many trends come and go, these are all classic choices that we see sticking around for a long time. Generally speaking, if you want your kitchen style to last you for the next decade, or if you want a style that will sell well, stay neutral with color choices, don’t overdo it with details, and make sure everything matches or complements each other nicely. If you have any questions about kitchen remodeling trends, or making a certain style work in your Long Island home, our professionals are full of answers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-58177624075163516822014-07-23T08:28:00.000-04:002016-05-18T12:35:33.768-04:00Happy Customer Sends in Her Kitchen Renovation Video!<span style="background-color: white; color: #404040; font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">Nothing makes us happier than a satisfied customer! <span style="background-color: white; color: #404040; font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">Watch this customer-submitted video of her brand new kitchen renovation...Reenie - the video and the kitchen came out great!!!!
Do you talk frequently about when the right time would be to remodel your kitchen? There are many reasons why today is the best time. Possibly the most important reason is the fact that time may be running out on many of the incentives that make it the perfect time to consider remodeling.

Market dynamics like the economic downturn and low interest rates making remodeling less expensive, manufacturer incentives like these may not last much longer, the fact that cabinet companies are beginning to get MUCH busier, all point to the fact that the best time to remodel is now.

This article, "Why Summer is a Great Time to Get Started On Your Remodel", explains why right now is the best time to remodel your kitchen or bathroom.

Choosing your cooking appliances – it’s something you should do early in your remodeling process, since those decisions can affect many other elements within your remodel. But how do you choose? It’s not all black and white (or stainless, or red, or built-in…). Putting color decisions aside (that’s the easy part), you’ll have to think through your expectations when it comes to the size and power you’ll need - and of course the budget you’re willing to put toward it.

Kitchen cooking appliances have come a long way in recent decades - and now you can get anything from space saving appliances, to standard or commercial-style professional appliances. So, who are they for – and what’s the difference?

Who chooses professional appliances?

Anyone who considers his or herself to be an avid cook could benefit from choosing professional cooking appliances. The same goes for those who just want more functional cooking space - and for those who seek to incorporate a more commercial-style look into their room (who also have the budget to do so). With a wider range of options than ever before, professional cooktops, ovens and ventilation systems have something to offer everyone.

What do I get with professional cooking appliances?

Professional cooking appliances not only look impressive, they are built to perform.

Ranges: Standard residential ranges are 30 inches wide, whereas professional ranges can be anywhere from 30” to 48” or even 60.” Although, they tend to come with higher price tags, you’ll find they also provide more design options and functionality – (think sealed burners, continuous cast-iron grates, and special simmer modes). Professional gas ranges can have upwards of 20,000 British Thermal Units (BTUs), whereas most standard ranges generally offer 5,000-9,500 BTUs.

Ovens: When it comes to professional ovens, you’ll find more options across the board when compared to standard ovens – more space, more racks, higher performance cooking modes (including convection, which distributes heat more evenly, and heavy duty broiling options), more lighting and visibility, easier cleanup and additional accessories (such as a built-in microwave). Options abound as much as budget allows! You can choose a professional oven that comes with the range, or you can choose a separate wall oven (or ovens, plural) if that suits your space better.

Ventilation: Make sure you pair your stove and oven with the proper ventilation system to keep your kitchen clean and safe. We have many options ranging from 30” to 60.” If you choose a professional stovetop and oven, you’ll want to choose a range that can keep up. Generally, for every 10,000 BTU your gas stove puts off, you should have at least 100 CFMs (cubic feet per minute). Also, take into consideration the width of your appliance as a guideline – You should have at least 100 CFMs per linear foot of a range against the wall, or 150CFMs per linear foot is on an island.

The finishing touch on your cabinets is the hardware that you choose (or don’t choose) to use. Depending on the style you go with for your kitchen, and your preference for cabinet hardware, there are many different options available. Choosing hardware can seem just as overwhelming as picking a finish for the cabinets, because of all the choices - but we’ve got some tips on how to select your hardware.

Placement is Key

Before you start drilling for hardware, you’ll want to do a little “window shopping” to see where it has been placed on cabinets in showrooms. This will give you a solid, visual idea of what works and what doesn’t work on your particular door style. Once you’ve seen how it’s been done, take the time to measure properly and mark where your hardware will be.

Depending on your choice of knobs or pulls you’ll have different places to drill, but generally speaking, your top hole will be drilled 2 ½ to 3 inches from the bottom edge (for wall cabinets) or top edge (for base cabinets) that is opposite the hinge. You’ll want to measure in about ¼ to ½ inch from the edge of the door that is opposite the hinge to make sure there is enough room to firmly hold the hardware.

Choosing Hardware

The options are endless when it comes to cabinet hardware, so browse as many options possible. There are a couple of tips you can keep in mind while you are browsing your options to help narrow down your search. First off, you should consider the style of your kitchen. While you do have many options, some hardware styles and cabinetry styles don’t mix well. Having a traditional or country inspired kitchen won’t go well with sleek pulls for hardware.

Also, think of the cost of each item. To keep within your budget, you’ll want to look at the number of pulls and knobs you need and see how cost effective your choice will be. Some hardware can range in the $1 to $5 per item range, and others can take you well above $100 per piece. Know what your budget is and stick within it.

Another factor in your choice should be finish and maintenance. Some finishes and textures on hardware may be harder to keep clean and looking nice, and with all the other cleaning going on in the kitchen, having to add hardware to that list may not be so pleasant.

Hardware doesn’t have to be something that is tricky or painful to choose. If you look through your options prior to shopping, and keep in mind style and function, you’ll be able to make it out without much stress. Your designer is also a great resource for hardware choices, as they know what will work best with your cabinet style.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-32788520392798459252014-04-15T11:39:00.000-04:002016-05-18T15:46:28.956-04:00How to Keep Your Counters Clean

The kitchen is a messy place. With hot pots, sharp knives, and spilled liquids, it may seem impossible to keep your countertops looking brand new. But, with a little attention on a regular basis you can keep those counters sparkling no matter what material they are.

Keeping Up with the Spills

No matter what surface your countertops are, there are a few rules you should always follow:

Clean up spills as soon as possible

Give your counters a light cleaning (at least) on a regular basis

This will help keep stains from forming on your counters and prevent the major cleanings that will eventually be needed when your counters are neglected. As for cleaning tips for specific counter surfaces, consider the following:

Quartz

Quartz is a dense, non-porous stone that is very resistant to scratches and stains. It doesn’t require sealing to stand up to abuse over the life of the counter. To clean quartz you’ll want to wash the counter surface with a soft cotton cloth using a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap. Do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the surface of the quartz.

Marble

It’s well known that marble is a porous stone and is therefore very susceptible to spills and stains. If you happen to spill something onto your elegant marble counters you should immediately blot up the spill with a soft cloth. Once you have blotted up the majority of the spill use water to wipe away any residue, and then follow up with a dry cloth to wipe away any excess moisture. It’s not a good idea to let marble counters air dry.

Granite

To clean granite countertops, it is best to use a special pH-neutral stone cleaner and a damp cloth. You’ll want to avoid soaps, abrasive cleaners, and citrus cleaners, as they can cause damage; and though it’s often mention as DIY cleaner, a vinegar-water mixture is also not the best idea because it can cause etching. Consumers offers granite countertops that come pre-treated with sealants that will cause liquid spills to bead on the surface, saving you from unsightly stains, and allowing you to simply clean them with warm water. These treatments are available with 5 or 15 year stain protection warranty.

Laminate

One good aspect of laminate countertops is the fact that they’re easy to clean. They won’t show stains as easy as some of the stone counters and it can also handle more powerful cleaners than the others. Use anything such as a simple soap mixture, a vinegar mixture, or a diluted mixture of bleach to wipe your counters clean.

Solid Surface

Designed with minimal maintenance in mind, solid surface counters are a messy cook’s dream. Most messes can be cleaned up with warm soapy water, ammonia-based household cleaners, or dedicated countertop cleaners. It’s important to avoid window cleaners, though, as they can cause a waxy build-up on your counters over time.

No matter what type of countertops you have, it’s always a good idea to do a quick cleanup after every use. With a little diligence along the way, your counters will look beautiful for a long time to come.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-29617073150029179552014-04-06T11:31:00.000-04:002016-05-18T12:36:57.016-04:00Remodeling to Stay vs. Remodeling to Sell

The housing market has always and will always continue to go up and down, but one thing will stay the same: remodeled kitchens and bathrooms help sell homes. In many cases, a small to mid-sized remodel of your kitchen or bathrooms can get a return of 80-90% of its budget when you sell your home.

If you’re not looking to sell your home in the foreseeable future, a kitchen or bath remodel is still a good idea, and without the need to please buyers, you can create the space that you love and have always wanted.

To better understand the difference between remodeling for resale and remodeling for yourself let’s take a look at both a little closer.

Remodeling for Resale

The goal of remodeling for resale is to help your house sell quickly and at a higher price point. The only problem is, you don’t know the audience you’re selling to. That means you need to appeal to the biggest audience as possible. This means picking materials and finishes that are most popular.

Some examples being:

Granite or Quartz countertops

Stainless-steel kitchen sink

White painted cabinets or natural wood-grain cabinets with a light finish

Another big seller in the kitchen is the appliances. You should choose a high quality stainless-steel fridge, dishwasher, oven/range, and microwave. Don’t get professional grade appliances, though, they’re overkill for the average resale.

Pay special attention to the cabinets and vanities that you choose for your kitchen and bath. Buyers love little upgrades like soft-close cabinets and waste basket pull-outs, so add them in for that extra little sparkle.

A few extra pointers:

Keep your remodel costs at 6-10% of your home’s value to get the best return on investment

Buyers expect the outside of the home to reflect the inside, so don’t have hodge-podge styles that change from room to room

The best advice is to choose a simple style and color scheme for your remodel

Remodeling for You

The most exciting time for a homeowner is when they decide to remodel for themselves. The biggest thing to remember when beginning this type of remodel is “Do what makes you happy.” Don’t worry about what’s popular or what sells; worry about what you want. Get professional grade appliances in bright green if you want to. Install a marble countertops if that suits your fancy. It’s your home and you can make it exactly the way you want it.

You can also design your kitchen or bath so that the space fits your family’s lifestyle. Build an island in the kitchen with built-in food bowls for your pups, or make the kid’s bathroom exciting for them with a colorful nautical theme. You could even do the unthinkable: knock out a bedroom. Many houses have small bedrooms that could be remodeled into a larger kitchen, or a grand new master bath.

Who is this remodel for? That’s the question you should ask yourself whenever you remodel a space in your home. If it’s for a new buyer with the intention of selling your home, then you should to keep it simple and stick with popular finishes, but if it’s for you then choose the design and upgrades that make you happy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-32984351131345762762014-04-04T11:26:00.000-04:002014-12-29T15:52:10.386-05:00When to Use Two-Toned Cabinets

Are you the type of person who can’t easily choose “just one?” There is much to like in the world of remodeling, and sometimes it is tough to make a decision – especially with something somewhat permanent (like cabinet color).

While you can’t really go wrong with choosing to install uniform cabinets in your kitchen (if you work with a reputable designer), many homeowners opt for two-tone cabinets instead - which is another great option.

There are many ways to make multiple cabinet colors work in your kitchen, as long as you do it tastefully.

Tasteful two-tone cabinets

Below are a few ways to make two-tone cabinets work in your space:

Create an island focal point: Two tone cabinets are a perfect way to bring a focal point into your kitchen. One way to achieve this is to use a uniform color throughout your kitchen wall and base cabinets, and then opt for a different, “popping” color for the island. To take it a step further, use that focal color here and there throughout the kitchen (for instance, you could make it appear in a molding treatment, the backsplash, or in a piece of art).

Dark on top, light on bottom: If you have a large kitchen area, and would like it to feel more homey, you may want to experiment with a design incorporating darker wall cabinets, and lighter base cabinets. This will help “bring down the ceiling” a bit, so to speak; and is also a great way to make your upper architecture stand out.

Light on top, dark on bottom: Maybe you have a tiny kitchen and would like to lighten up the overall look, but still keep a bit of color in the cabinetry. Many homeowners use darker cabinets on the base (to ground the room) and lighter wall cabinets, to keep the room from looking heavy. For even more openness, install glass doors on your upper cabinets as well!

Don’t be afraid to experiment with ideas when it comes to two-tone or multi-tone cabinets. They can work beautifully into many different kitchen styles - from traditional to modern. If you’d like to incorporate it into yours, ask an experienced designer to help you come up with the most flattering look for your kitchen space.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-7363492615677252872014-03-26T11:13:00.000-04:002014-12-29T15:53:23.548-05:00Start Your Remodel with Confidence

A prepared homeowner has an idea of what they want their new kitchen to look like before they begin the remodeling process. They take the time to do their research, understand the remodeling process, and begin to sketch out that vision they have in their head. As someone who’s going to begin the process of a kitchen remodel, it’s important to have your head on your shoulders before you start talking finishes, countertops and lighting.

Lay Down the Layout

A kitchen can be made or broken by the layout it has, and that is probably why you are beginning your next remodeling project. Typical layouts for kitchens are in the shape of an I,U,G or L.

I-Shaped Kitchen: Also known as a single galley kitchen, an I-shaped kitchen is great if you have a small space, yet still want functionality.

U-Shaped Kitchen: If you like to have a zone that is for cooking, a U-shaped kitchen can give you the counter space you desire, while keeping your work triangle intact.

G-Shaped Kitchen: A take on the U-shape, this kitchen layout adds a peninsula that gives you extra seating and counter space for prep-work.

L-Shaped Kitchen: A popular style for kitchen layouts, this shape keeps the work triangle out of areas with foot traffic, so others can congregate in the kitchen without getting in your way.

Know what type of kitchen layout you want to create before you begin your remodeling project. Each layout has its benefits and weaknesses, but no one knows how you will use your kitchen better than you.

Find Resources

The best way to find resources that will aid you in your remodel is to find a reputable dealer with a website that puts all the tools you need at your fingertips. A dealer with the wherewithal to supply their customers with useful resources that will help them better understand what to expect from their project before the sale, can be trusted to provide great customer service and support throughout the entire renovation process.

Trusted Designers

Once you have decided on the shape of the space and have found resources to inspire and inform you, it’ll be time to find a trusted designer. At Consumers Kitchens & Baths, our designers are graduates of the New York Kitchen & Bath Design Institute, where they receive extensive technical training, in-depth product knowledge training, and a comprehensive education in kitchen layout and design.
Preparing yourself for your kitchen project is an essential step for prospective remodelers. Before you begin the process, make sure you understand the layout you want, know where to find resources, and find a qualified designer you can trust to do the job.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-80398444255118231112014-03-17T11:08:00.000-04:002014-12-29T16:13:41.040-05:00Designing a Traditional Kitchen with a Modern Twist

Your style is unique, and your dream kitchen should be no different. When beginning to choose what your kitchen design style is, don’t feel limited to one style or another! Think of the possibilities there are if you combine two styles that complement each other to make the kitchen of your dreams. Two very popular design choices in 2013 were traditional style kitchens and sleek modern kitchens, and if you’re thinking you love both styles you can make them work together.

Bold Colors

A traditional kitchen is mainly defined by the cabinetry style you use. Known for having raised panel doors and detailed door fronts, traditional style kitchens usually use natural wood colors and glazes. To spice up this look, use bold colors on the walls and in the accents to keep your kitchen looking lively. You can even use bold colors on the cabinets if you want to take it to the next level. Modern kitchens are known for their use of color to make items pop, so go ahead and incorporate that into you traditional kitchen to kick it up a notch.

Up the Technology

Technology in your kitchen doesn’t have be to as traditional as the style you’ve chosen. Modern kitchen designs use new-age appliances to really up the cool factor in the space. This can translate to your traditional kitchen with drawer microwave ovens, touch screen controls, and the like. There is no need for your traditional kitchen to have traditional appliances if you are looking for a modern feel.

Choosing the style of your kitchen doesn’t have to be limited to what is on display in the showroom. Take your favorite parts of any style and put them together to make the kitchen of your dreams. Consumer’s Kitchens and Bath’s designers are trained and ready to help you meld any style together to create your kitchen, so contact us today if you’re ready to start your remodel.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-92189734790166796322014-03-15T11:07:00.000-04:002016-05-18T12:28:58.177-04:00Some Things to Remember When Getting Your Remodeling Quote

Waiting is no fun – whether it be for money to come flowing in, for a delayed flight, or to get started on your remodel. In this day and age, we’ve all grown accustomed to instant gratification thanks to technology, online stores and delivery services. Before you know it, we’ll all have a way to clean up our kid’s rooms with the press of a button (or maybe even the twitch of a nose, like Samantha from BeWitched)!

But there are still some things in life that shouldn’t be rushed – like getting your quote on a remodel, for instance.

Take time to do things right

Homeowners looking forward to their upcoming remodel often get a little ahead of themselves in the excitement, leading to skipped steps. Kitchen remodels, bath remodels, or any remodeling project are not one-size-fits-all and are extremely customizable, so unfortunately, it isn’t beneficial to immediately run to a few dealers, spend a few minutes with each, and then come home with a few quotes. There is much more involved.

In order to get an accurate quote, there are a few steps you need to take on your own initially –researching your ideas and getting realistic about costs, choosing one dealer you are comfortable with (who can give you a few quotes) and being completely open about your needs and budget.

Our no cost, no obligation VIP Kitchen Project Service keeps all this in mind to help you begin your remodel in an organized manner. By the time you’ve designed your bathroom vanity with its stylish cabinets, complimentary countertop and eye-catching sink, you probably don’t feel like putting a lot of thought into choosing a faucet for the sink. “A faucet is a faucet,” you may think, but there’s more to it than that and what type of sink you chose will often help make the decision for you.

4 Types of Faucets

When talking about bathroom sinks, there are four types of faucets that are most often used. You can get all sorts of finishes and designs within each type of faucet, but for simplicity’s sake the four main types are:

8-Inch (Widespread) – if your sink has holes cut for a faucet you measure from the center of the left outermost hole to the center of the right outermost hole. If this distance is 8” then you will need an 8 inch, or widespread faucet. These faucets come in 3 separate pieces – hot handle, cold handle, and spout – and can sometimes fit holes that are up to 16 inches apart.

4-Inch – Four inch faucets most often have a baseplate that is connected to the hot and cold handles as well as the spout. If your measurement of the sink holes comes to four inches, then this is the faucet for you. Some 4 inch faucets come in three pieces, if you prefer the style of a wide spread faucet on a smaller sink.

Single-Hole – If your sink has only one hole cut for a faucet, then a single-hole is what you’ll need. More often than not these faucets involve a spout that either has two handles for hot and cold attached directly to it, or a single lever that controls water temperature and flow rate.

Wall-Mounted – As the name says, these faucets are mounted directly to the wall by the sink. They come in all different shapes and sizes and, being mounted to the wall, there aren’t many restrictions to what you can choose. You should, however, make sure the spout reaches the interior of the sink – preferably the center – and the spout should have at least 1 inch of clearance above the sink rim.

If you have a sink that doesn’t have any holes, but you aren’t a fan of wall-mounted sinks, there’s an option of fastening an 8-inch, 4-inch, or single-hole faucet directly to the vanity countertop. Just make sure the spout has the same clearance as recommended for the wall-mount faucet.

Bathroom faucets are an important part of your bathroom design. By choosing one that compliments the other faucets and hardware in your bathroom you can really tie together the whole design.

People are known to split into different sides of arguments – for example, cat people and dog people (you know what we’re talking about). When it comes to remodeling your bathroom, the split appears when talking about the shower. We ask ourselves, “Am I a stand-alone shower person or a tub-shower combo person?”

If you’re not quite sure which side of the divide you fall on, don’t worry. This article will help explain the pros and cons of each.

The Hidden Design

First and foremost, you need to realize that, when it comes to showers and baths, there’s more than meets the eye. Everyone enjoys looking at trendy bath fixtures, but the hidden aspects that are often forgotten are just as important when considering a new design.

Remember that the high-end fixture you have your heart set on will probably require ¾” plumbing. That means you’ll be replacing the ½” plumbing that is standard in most showers. It’s also a good idea to replace the hot and cold water valves so they will age at the same rate as your new faucets. By dealing with these issues upfront you will save yourself major headaches down the road.

Stand-Alone

With stand-alone showers you are free of the space restrictions of a tub. This means you can configure your shower almost any way you want. You want a shower in the corner? Put it in the corner. You want it in the middle of the bathroom? Put it in the middle of the bathroom. Having a stand-alone shower gives you more freedom to design your bathroom exactly how you want it.

The flipside of that freedom and creativity is the fact that stand-alone showers - especially the more custom they are – are typically more expensive and require additional plumbing. Those six body sprayers you want? Yeah, they’re going to need plumbing too.

Tub-Shower Combo

The majority of homes in America have at least one tub-shower combo. We say that and you probably imagine the simple, white-acrylic combo that you never really wanted when thinking about your dream bathroom, but tub-shower combos have come a long way. While the footprint of the tub will dictate where you can place them, tub-shower combos still offer a wide variety in styles.

It’s also a common belief that having a tub-shower combo in your home – as opposed to stand-alone showers only – can help your home sell when it’s on the market. Not to mention the fact that you can never just sit back, turn some water jets on and relax in your stand-alone shower like you can in a bathtub.

When designing your bathroom and trying to decide between a stand-alone shower and a tub-shower combo it’s important to know what you need, what you want, and what you can afford. By finding the perfect shower or tub for your needs you can make your bathroom a place that’s not only functional, but enjoyable too.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-76076586331962488742014-02-14T10:56:00.000-05:002014-12-29T16:35:53.199-05:00Kitchen Layouts for Your Lifestyle – Part 2

Sure, there are plenty of basic layouts and styles that will suffice, but then there are those that were built for their homeowner. In part 1 of this post, we went over kitchen layouts for families with children and for the entertainers out there. Because lifestyles range so much, we’ve got plenty more to share.

Take a look at these ideas:

The frequent flyer

This persona may find him/herself constantly on the go – whether it’s traveling for a consulting job or just meeting up with friends at a local restaurant 5 days a week. Here are some things to consider when it comes to layout and design:

Budget – If you’re rarely going to use your kitchen, there’s no need to upgrade your countertop edges or other details you won’t have time to appreciate. Go for options that look nice, but won’t break the bank.

Appliances – No need to install top-of-the-line appliances if you’re never going to use them. Choose sleek finishes that you can enjoy when you’re there, but don’t worry about that extra stove burner or the design of your refrigerator too much.

Style – Although you won’t be using your kitchen to its full potential, you still may have people over from time to time. Opt for a modern or contemporary look that is both stylish and smart, just like you.

In between homes

If you’re moving into a home that you know is temporary, but still want a nice kitchen, it would be wise to design your kitchen with resale in mind. We recently covered this in our post “Remodeling With Resale In Mind,” but here are some key reminder tips:

Openness – buyers tend to seek an open layout that will allow them to enjoy their surroundings while cooking. Keep your design open by eliminating extra walls and including proper lighting throughout the space.

Finishes – You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s always best to keep things neutral when you’re planning to resell, especially in more permanent areas. Opt for lighter finishes and dress the room up with texture.

Style – Choose a style that will appeal to the masses, like transitional (which includes the warmth of traditional with the sleekness of contemporary kitchens).

Planning a kitchen remodel goes much deeper than choosing the appliances, countertops and kitchen cabinets that speak to you. It can and should go much deeper than aesthetics alone. If you’re truly trying to get the most out of your space, it is important to choose a layout and design that will work for your lifestyle.

Here are a couple examples to get you thinking:

Family home with young children

If you’ve got kids, chances are your family never has a dull moment. With everyone constantly in and out, it’s important to cherish any amount of time you can share – even if that means while you cook and they do their homework. When planning your layout, pay attention to:

Flow - A family like this will benefit from having an open kitchen layout that allows the chef to be part of the fun.

Seating - Kitchen islands are perfect for families with children, as they provide more storage (there’s never too much), seating and extra counterspace, (perfect for your family to help you roll out the pizza dough).

Spacing - Be mindful of heavy traffic areas in your kitchen, and make sure you give yourself enough space to accommodate you, your hot pot, and a kid running by.

Safety – Be mindful of countertop corners (you may want to opt for a rounded edge vs. pointed).

The entertainer

Are you usually the person nominated to host gatherings because of your award-worthy culinary skills or your ability to make everything picture perfect? Embrace your talents when planning your design. Keep in mind:

Openness – If you’re finalizing preparations and your friends or neighbors arrive a bit early, you probably won’t want to miss out on any fun. Keep your layout open so you don’t feel like a servant.

Counterspace – You can never have too much counterspace, as you need plenty to slice and dice, and then some to display your array in a fabulous way. Including a kitchen island and/or a kitchen bar top will help.

Task Lighting – Since you want to make sure everything looks perfect, be mindful of task lighting over areas you’ll be doing most of your chopping and preparing.

Appliances – If you are entertaining frequently, you may benefit from features like a double-oven, warming trays and a spacious refrigerator. A snazzy vent-hood will also jazz up the space while helping you clear the air before your guests arrive!

The good news - you’re remodeling your kitchen. The bad news - remodeling your kitchen can seem a bit more taxing than most homeowners are prepared for. Remodeling a kitchen has many moving parts, and the best way to prepare for a kitchen remodel is to first understand the common issues that could arise. So what exactly are the common surprises consumers encounter and probably wish they would have figured out beforehand? Below is our list to help you get started on your remodel.

Remodeling is intrusive

Of course you realize that there will be people there moving things in and out and that the house may be a bit messy – but many people are sometimes surprised at the burden a kitchen remodel can create. No kitchen access means you and your family may be eating out frequently, and perhaps even staying at a hotel or a friend’s home occasionally.

When you know about this in advance and are prepared for it, the transition from once functional kitchen - to disaster area - to amazing new kitchen is much easier.

Unforeseen problems

In a perfect world, you would remodel your kitchen exactly as planned – right on schedule with no hitches. The reality - unforeseen circumstances can arise. Suppose that you accept delivery of your new kitchen cabinets and they don't fit or function properly. Who should be responsible for the cost to fix such a problem?

At Consumers Kitchens & Baths, we make certain that the responsibility of a trouble free fit resides where it should - with our professional team of accredited designers, bonded measurers, and experienced order verification staff.

Clean up After Remodel

Remodeling is messy - period. While your installers may only work in one area of your home and try hard to minimize construction dust- that does not mean dust will only stay in one area. While your installer should wipe down and clean up their area of work, be prepared to do some cleaning of your own afterwards.

The installers you work with will likely inform you of common surprises so that you can properly prepare your expectations and your home in advance. Of course, when concerns arise about products you purchase from Consumers, you can remain confident that our specially
trained 200 person team is only a phone call, or e-mail away to help you resolve your problem.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8080810214166003054.post-41123659469653348202014-01-25T10:28:00.000-05:002016-05-18T12:52:07.916-04:00Stock, Modular or Custom Cabinetry – What’s the difference?

Sometimes finding a perfect solution to your problems can be a drag. Take seeking a perfectly fitting suit for example – they make suits in standard sizes (AKA “Off The Rack”), but they don’t all fit just right for everyone. The standard sizes may be just what the majority of people look for, but not all people are created equal when it comes to build or personal preference (and wouldn’t it be boring if we were?). That’s when custom made (AKA Bespoke tailoring) suits come in handy.

Think of stock cabinets as the “Off The Rack” suits, modular cabinets as “Off The Rack” suits altered to fit your shape and custom cabinetry as the specially made to order suit by a Master Bespoke tailor.

Sure, the production factory-made products serve their purpose as long as they fit the situation and you can settle for the selection that is offered, but as you know people are individualistic and their tastes differ as well as the sizes of the rooms in their homes, and modifications can only accomplish so much.

Stock and Modular Cabinetry

These are most likely to be options you’d find in your local big-box store.

Stock – Cabinets are pulled to order from previously made inventory sitting in a warehouse. Stock cabinets are “what you see is what you get” options. They’re manufactured in factories in standard sizes with limited size, style & color selections. Although they can be your most inexpensive option and delivered quickly, they will be less quality in fit and finish than other alternatives, and don’t leave much in the way of creativity.

Modular – Cabinets are assembled to order from components that were previously produced at different times and from different lots of wood. Think of modular cabinetry as glorified stock cabinets. They come with a larger, but still limited selection of style, finish & accessory options, and they’re only manufactured in 3” increments. Changes to the cabinets to accommodate the best layout for your room are usually limited to cabinet depth and construction options.

Custom Cabinetry

Sometimes stock and modular options just don’t cut it when you’re choosing your kitchen or bathroom cabinets, and that’s where custom cabinetry steals the show!

Custom – Cabinets are made to order. All your doors are custom made per order at the same time, from the same lot of wood. They are then hand finished, by an experienced craftsman, a single kitchen at a time to guarantee an impeccable, uniform finish throughout the entire kitchen. Some of the additional benefits of custom cabinetry are the huge selection of color and finish treatment options available as well as custom sizes manufactured in 1/8” increments. Custom sizing is appropriate for just about every kitchen. Here are just some examples of what custom sizing can do for you: exacting reveals around windows, minimize the unattractive gap at the top of the refrigerator and perfectly center sinks all without using unsightly, space wasting fillers. Custom cabinets tend to be a bit pricier than basic modular cabinets, but not when you buy from Consumers Kitchens & Baths.

At Consumers we have the largest selection of high quality custom cabinetry options available at modular cabinet price points. We love working with clients to come up with the perfect solution for their homes. If custom isn’t right for you, don’t worry – we have the best value in stock and modular options as well.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0
